A Family’s Visit to Maggie’s Cancer Caring Centre

We were very lucky to hear from repeat Twopresents user, Jane who’s son Jon shared his 7th birthday celebration with Maggie’s Cancer Caring Centre. We asked Jane to share her thoughts about Jon’s party and the family’s visit to the charity after the celebration…

Twopresents: Why did you choose to have a Twopresents Celebration?

Jane: Jon chose to have a Twopresents Celebration because he wanted to have fun with all his friends but didn’t feel he needed the presents. We knew that his friends would want to give something so thought it would be better for the money to be given to a good cause instead.

Twopresents: Why did you choose to support Maggie’s Cancer Caring Centre?

Jane: The previous year, Jon had supported Mother’s Choice which was wonderful. This year he wanted something that supported Cancer Care as he had witnessed how valuable organizations like Maggie’s and Hospice can be in assisting families and their loved ones through their journey with cancer.

Twopresents: What kind of party did Jon have? Did he choose a gift for himself?

Jane: Jon had a big celebration with his friends at the Adventure Zone at the Aberdeen Marina Club. We decided to donate the full amount, as we were very touched by how generous all his friends were.

Twopresents: Tell us about your visit to Maggie’s?

Jane: We were made very welcome to tour the beautiful and peaceful space at Maggie’s. The architecture is well thought out and we loved the pond and lovely flowers, plants and trees that surrounded the Centre. It has a very homely feel too with a large open kitchen and sitting area for people to gather to share and support each other. There are classes such as nutrition classes, music therapy, yoga and art classes.

Twopresents: How did you/Jon feel after your visit? What did you learn?

Jane: We felt very moved by how passionate the staff working at Maggie’s were in providing a calming, inviting and supportive space for anyone going through cancer whether it be carers, family members or patients. I loved how it was situated right next to the Oncologist department, so anyone going for their treatment can wait in the comfort of Maggie’s Centre. As we know sometimes waiting time for appointments can be hours. The Centre includes a large beautiful open kitchen so that visitors can freely help themselves to drinks and prepare food too.

Twopresents: Please include any other comments about your experience.

Jane: It would be wonderful if more Centres like this can be opened up along side more hospitals. A little love, care and attention is the best medicine! We feel Maggie’s Centre provides that.

Thank you to Twopresents for providing this service and making it easier to support all these wonderful causes!
